Self service checkout like you have now.Public computer access.Quite study area, with couches not like what we had before.Childrens area, playground outside maybe in the peace garden outside of the window. An upstairs balcony or window study area with a view over the campus. Open up the roof top and make it a study area/smoking zone.

7/19 John:

I would love to have an upstairs balcony.A childrens reading area.Private study areas or rooms.Conference rooms and public computers.

I would like the whole upper floor to be a bar/disco. For those of us that are in the library 24 hours a day this would be great! The idea about a nap area would be awesome too. And why not also have beds and showers? Then i can literally live in the library and only have to leave it to go to class! Here is my idea for the design:basement: car parking1st floor: cafeteria/snacks/movies etc2nd floor: computers, magazines, more snacks3rd floor: sleep area,showers..more snacks4th floor: Bar/Disco with 5 dj's,bar in every corner, and a Audio system that'll rock tha house! Roof: Tikki hut, spa, swimming pool, observation deck..sky's the limit!

As a a student, I would really appreciate 24 hour quiet study space. Also, the old library was always the center of school because of the e-mail stations... not the most orthodox service in a library, but the most popular. Our students do NOT all own laptops or have access to the internet (contrary to the catalog's statement) and so quick access to e-mail stations should be back. COmfortable reading rooms and exhibits would be great! Also, has there been thought of having live music on Friday nights in a secluded part of the complex, we have a great music dept.

E-mail stations, please bring them back. Also, 24 hour quiet study room. would be AMAZING! Also, has there been thought to using some of the new reading rooms to have events on Friday nights? Live jazz, book readings... get the community (students first) involved with the building in the evenings.

Name tags on the workers, a cafe, a childrens play area, a public computer room, student lounge, staff lounge. TV video conference rooms.

Video Conference room, webinar conference room for students.

Childrens play area.

Longer hours and a Nap area.

I would like to see an area for children. Have childrens books, games and computers for children. I am a parent and a CSU Fresno student sometimes it would be nice to be able to take my child there and have a place for them to be entertained while I study or meet a group near by.

We should have a media area where we can view educational material and do conference calls or web sessions. This would be great for students.

a copy center. The copy machines and office equipment should be placed in its own area and centralized, this would make it more efficient and easier to find when needed. Also we should have a down stairs public computer lab.

Site Visits

The VTF had an intense two day site visit and tours of the following libraries and museums on May 21st and 22nd:
San Jose StateUniversity and Public Libary (http://www.sjlibrary.org/)
The Technology Museum of Innovation (http://www.thetech.org/)
Sonoma State University Library (http://library.sonoma.edu/)
The Charles Schultz Museum and Research Center (http://www.schulzmuseum.org/)

Our purpose was to learn about what worked and what didn't when planning their buildings, what trends do they see in libraries and museums, and what mistakes should we avoid in our building. We learned so much and brought back so much information! Our brains are spinning from all of the new ideas and trends that we learned about. I have asked each member of the VTF to post some of the most interesting features or services that they learned from our visit.

Outreach, Communication, and Staff Development

I want to see the HML become a cultural center. I would like to see the HML partner with museums in the community, making full use of its exhibit space. Beyond artwork, I would also like to see us set aside times for non-quiet events in the library. For example, music, poetry readings, drama, and dancing. I would like to see the HML reflect other events on campus, for example, Internation Coffee Hour and Cineculture could extend to a display of works from various countries.

What would you like to see along these lines of the arts in the library? Do you have any ideas about other partners?
