I'd like to see better (and more) customer service in the Library. Friendly and informed workers who are willing to help. Maybe hire a few worker to be in our stacks to direct the patrons towards the proper place.
What about having a section in the Library for geneological research? Make this a premier location with historical books, computer research cd's, all the census data, with microfishe readers for newspaper reels, etc. Somewhat like the library downtown but CSU better.
When libraries are getting smaller due to technological advances why are we spending almost 200 million (including interest on the bond over 30 years) to expand our library when we could have modernized what we already had for less and minimized the burden on tax payers.
There should be recycling containers readily available in the new library. Additionally, there should be displays documenting the positive effects of sustainable action, perhpas with a tie-in to some sustainable efforts utilized by the local American Indian tribes.
You'd be surprised how much it costs to "modernize" an old building. The plumbing, electrical, internet and space were all inadequate to serve the current population of students, let alone any future enrollment growth. The nice part is that the taxpayers agreed to make this expenditure and voted to make this new building happen! Our job, to which we very much look forward, is to provide the service that will do justice to the wonderful building we will soon have.
The portion of the HML that was demolished also had numerous environmental issues (ie asbestos) that made "modernizing" it somewhat more limiting and challenging as well. Demolishing it and building new also allowed for us to upgrade the technology that will be needed to "shrink" the physical space requirements overall, too.
The Vision Task Force has been charged by Dean Peter McDonald to address all aspects of services, technology and partnerships for the new Library building that is scheduled to be completed in 2008. Our work will be based on Dean McDonald's Vision 2008: An Introduction for HML Staff and Fresno State's Strategic Plan for Excellence III: 2006-2011. The commitee is to suggest ideas, vision and initiatives that relate to four themes: User Services, Physical and Virtual Space, Information Technology, and Outreach, Communication and Staff Development.
We cannot accomplish our task, however, without the input of you! Please respond to the questions related to our themes that are posted on our blog with your best ideas so that we can bring foreword the most innovative suggestions possible!

Please do not allow the current library closing music to follow us into the New Madden Library!
