Physical and Virtual Space

Our first theme relates to space. This is what I would like to see when I walk into the first floor of the Library. Would you like this? Why or why not? This is the North Carolina State University Learning Commons. Let the VTF know what you think!

I like space and I think library books should be hidden from view. They should be on the second floor.

The first floor should be filled with a coffee lounge and many terminals for access to the internet.

What about a wine and cheese bar featuring Fresno State wines--there would be collaboration between departments.

I think it would be nice to have either videoclips or photos of things that you think we should consider when you go on the field trip (for those who cannot attend). I know that would be helpful to me!

I'm taking my camera for photos and video clips, so I hope to get some good visuals.

One might be surprised, but I would like to see...books. Lots of books. I really miss browsing the stacks since construction began. I would like to walk into the library and see rows and rows of books.

Oh and will the book sales return? I miss those too.

You will definitely see the books as they will all be shelved in the "collection level" on one floor.

What did you like about the book sales?

I also like books. That's a reason I enjoy being on this task force.

The books will still be there, just in a different place. We want to welcome people from different perspectives and I think the first "space" that people see determines whether they'll stay for the books, technology, and other information.

I would like to see the Library kept cleaner, especially the restrooms.

A lot of people really want a Starbucks coffee shop in the library. People also want the library to be clean. When you go into a bookstore model like Barnes and Nobles or Borders, you get both ... and we expect for that feeling to carry over to the library. I hope that with the greater size of the library, the more people who will be in the library, and the coffee shop idea in the library, we will have a beefed up cleaning crew ... we will definitely need that. It could be the most beautiful building in the world, but if it is not clean, I believe that will have an effect on how people feel about the space. We just visited the Woodward Park Public Library. They have 2 fulltime janitors on duty for that branch library. We will definitely need to beef up the cleaning crew for the New Madden Library.
